WHAT IS SPEECH THERAPY?

What is Speech?

Speech refers to the production of sounds in spoken language. With a disorder or delay in speech, a child may have difficulty speaking clearly because they do not produce sounds correctly. They may also have trouble with teh rhythm of their speech or fluency. They may repeat sounds or pause while speaking.

What is Language?

Language is the sharing of communication using conventionally understood words, signs and symbols used by a group or community. It includes both the understanding (receptive) and the use (expressive) of language. A child with a language delay or disorder is struggling with understanding directions or formulating thoughts or feelings. Language also includes reading and writing skills. It is possible to be delayed in one or both of these areas of communication.
